Feeling Disenfranchised

I've read with envy all week accounts of voters, a few at least anyway, heading to the polls to vote in Bel Air and Aberdeen. Here in Abingdon we got to vote on, let's see, nothing.
Given the lackluster turnout in many races, including the Baltimore mayor's race, maybe I'm in the minority. I know sometimes the candidate choices are not the greatest, but to just have the opportunity to possibly have your voice heard, what that must be like. Here in Abingdon, I can only imagine.

Don't feel too bad... people up here in Bel Air have the opportunity to vote every two years, and every two years, around 10% of those eligible to vote show up in Town Hall.
At least those 10% voted for the right folks this year...

I feel the same way. I don't feel like my most local representative actually represents Abingdon. I hear she likes the bargains at BJ's, though...

There is still a need for members of the Abingdon/Emmorton/Riverside Community Council. As soon as enough people volunteer, the council can hold monthly meetings with residents and report back to the County Executive about what Harford County should be doing for us. Call 410-638-3355.

Or, we could try to incorporate Abingdon as a city, like Edgewood residents are discussing doing right now. That would require a signature from 25% of Abingdon residents and approval from the County Council. According to the Sun, they don't like to approve these petitions because it would redirect a percentage of tax dollars raised from the area from the county to the new municipality. Just imagine if Target's, Wal-Mart's and all those businesses' tax money actually came back to Abingdon...
