Book Sale
The Friends of the Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Abingdon Library. They had lots of books last year at reasonable prices. Support the library and do some Christmas shopping. Many of these books are in really good shape. TAA loves getting books for Christmas!

Library Yard Sale
The big sale set for the Abingdon Library tomorrow has been postponed until 8 a.m. Sept. 13. Hanna's already canceled all Harford County School activities tomorrow. Batten down the hatches -- or at least secure your lawn furniture.

I Love the Library....but
Longtime readers are aware that we here at TAA love the Abingdon library. It's got everything. In fact, just last week we were checking out books when a man from Bel Air chatted us up and said, "you know, I've lived across (MD.) 24 for four years and I never realized this was over here. It's great!"
But lately we've had some library trouble, and this has happened to us enough times that we thought it was worth mentioning.
On more than one occasion we've returned books that don't show up -- movies, too -- which can be a very expensive proposition.
The first time it happened was right after the long July 4th weekend. The librarians told me they had put things in a special bin and nothing was going to be marked overdue from that bin even though it was going to take awhile to get to it. We were concerned because we'd checked out four movies. A few days later, they still hadn't showed up as returned. Then three were, but one wasn't. We had to go to the library and they marked it as "claimed to be returned" and really made us feel like we were lying about it, to be honest.
In August, we returned a book, which wasn't overdue, but it still showed up as checked out. We went to the library, got it off the shelf, and said, "this is still showing up on the card, but it's here." He assured us that when someone checked it out, it would have cleared on the card, but it was a very obscure book that no one ever may have checked out, or not checked out for a long time. And then we would have racked up fines.
This has happened a few more times since then. We are now religiously checking our account online to make sure everything clears when we take it in. But really, it makes us nervous. We don't mind giving donations to the library that we love, we just can't bear the shame of fines or having to "claim" we returned something. (We did. Honest!)

Summer Reading Program at HCPL
Today's the first day you can sign up for the Harford County Public Library's summer reading program. Here's the info from the library:

Our Summer Reading Program is designed for kids of all ages - preschool, elementary, middle school and teens. It's easy and free to join. Register in person at any branch beginning June 16th and receive a backpack/tote bag (while supplies last) and valuable coupons. (Preschoolers will receive a pail and shovel set.)

Read the books you like to read. Come to the library throughout the summer and participate in exciting programs and activities such as events presented by the Maryland Science Center and the Maryland Zoo at Baltimore, along with magicians, storytellers and more!
When you have read all your books, return your completed reading list and receive a certificate & a free book (while supplies last) and complete a fun activity. Last day to return your completed readling list is August 16th. (Read to Me, Please! for preschoolers and children not reading on their own have 25 books read to them.)

Winter Reading Program
It's not too late to sign up for the Winter Reading Program 2008 at any Harford County Public Library branch. The program continues from now through March 1. You just need to read five books between then and now. I signed up today and received a "Run Wild...Read" pen and my book log.
This is my third year participating. The first year I received a very nice coffee mug and coaster set and last year they gave out pens and a journal. The librarian said they've had a great response since the sign up began last week.
High school students can also sign up this year. They just need to read three books. The high school with the largest percentage of participants will receive a trophy.

Weird Crosswalk on Tollgate
On Tollgate Road at the new Tiree Court age-restricted condos, little white pillars of crosswalk have sprung up. In theory, it's a good idea to have a spot where the folks can cross the street. In reality, once they cross the street, there's no sidewalk on the other side so they'll have to walk in the driveway or in the grass. It's also almost a full right angle when you're making a right turn into the library.
I think my next poll question might be how long these white posts last. (For reference, see constantly disappearing small white posts at intersection of Tollgate and 24 by Wal-Mart)
While mentioning my favorite place, the library, don't forget that Friday is the library "book fair" at Barnes & Noble. Vouchers should be available at all branches. Presenting a voucher at B&N will give the library a percentage of your purchase.

Interesting Bookmarks
Picked up two interesting items at the Bel Air library. The first is an easy way to support the library while doing your Christmas shopping.
At the Bel Air library (not sure if this is available at Abingdon) you can pick up a voucher for the Barnes & Noble Bookfair supporting the Harford County Public Library Foundation.
On Dec. 7 at the Bel Air Barnes & Noble if you present the voucher to the cashier while making your purchase, a percentage of the net sale will be donated to the foundation. It doesn't say how much, but any bit will help.
Two new interesting titles we're interested here at TAA are The Letters of Noel Coward and Options, by the Fake Steve Jobs.
Another bookmark takes us back to one of our favorite topics, road construction. The bookmark asks readers to "Help Shape the Future of Transportation in Maryland" by going online and completing a 10-minute survey. The answers "you provide will be used to shape Maryland's 20-year vision for transportation."

Loving the Library
On a day like today, what could be better than curling up with a good book?
Which brings me to one place I wanted to highlight, the Abingdon library. The library is one of our great resources in Abingdon. Not only a gigantic selection of new books is available, but also DVDs (we got the entire third season of "The Wire" there), music, CD-ROMs, XBox games, and a fully stocked reference library.
Another feature we're very happy with here, e-mail alerts when your materials are due. Since I'm always losing the slip, that's very handy. If you plug in your library card number, you can also reserve books online and a new service also lets you watch movies on your computer for free.
I visit the library at least once a week, but most weeks even more. It's easy to park, has a convenient drive-up window and the librarians are very helpful. And don't forget the free WiFi. I do miss the coffee shop, but they have put in vending machines.
As an added bonus (not on a day like today, of course) hike up the short trail to the pond and you'll see turtles, some frogs and fish. It's a great little "nature" walk for the younger set.
